“Jesus Christ is the firstborn from the dead; glory and kingship be His for ever and ever.” Revelation 1:5
Historian's Corner
Kelly Grimaldi, Historian, Albany Diocesan Cemeteries
Outside my office window a few patches of daffodils are poking up through the mulch. The relatively warm sunshine for this time of year has fooled them. I hope they are not in for a rude awakening when and if a real New York winter decides to pay us a visit. The little sprouts remind me that soon Historic St. Agnes Cemetery will spring to life and be brimming with activity. You may be wondering how a cemetery can possibly spring anywhere – especially to life! And yet every year, when warmer days turn our brown landscape to lovely shades of green, we do just that.
We have much planned for this year beginning with our lecture series filled with interesting topics from genealogy research, a book review with James Breig who will discuss his latest work, “Searching for Sgt. Bailey”, to exploring the meaning of dreams as way of communicating with the departed. Our 5th Annual Photo Contest will kick-off on February 13th and run until September 21st. Prize money this year has increased and so has the opportunity to win. Two honorable mentions will be awarded in addition to first, second and third place prizes for a total of $1,100 in prize money. On Memorial Day I hope volunteers will join me in cleaning Civil War veterans’ gravestones that have recently been reset as part of our effort to ensure all gravesites for veterans are properly memorialized. Equipment and cleaning agents will be provided by the cemetery. On Wednesdays from June through August we will offer a Gravestone Workshop to anyone interested in learning how to clean and make minor repairs to aging monuments. Also in the summer from June through August a walking tour of the cemetery will be offered every Thursday at 11 AM. Tentative plans are being made to offer art appreciation classes this summer as well. We are also looking to form a garden club. As I said – Beautiful St. Agnes Cemetery is abuzz with activity!
I encourage anyone interested in our activities to give me a call at 518-463-0134 ext. 110 or send me an email at KellyAnn.Grimaldi@rcda.org and I can give you all the details. Information is also posted regularly on our website: CapitalDistrictCemteries.org and on St. Agnes Cemetery’s Facebook wall. Rural cemeteries like St. Agnes were never intended to serve only as final resting places for the departed. They were designed to be beautiful and interesting places to visit, have picnics, explore and enjoy. I welcome your visit, questions and/or ideas. Please stop in soon!
